Cease a member

Employees may cease being members of our schemes because:

  • they are ceasing eligible employment; or
  • they are choosing to exercise choice of superannuation fund and wish to contribute to another fund.

How you process the cessation depends on why they are ceasing membership and the scheme they are a member of.

PSS or CSS member ceasing eligible employment

PSS or CSS members must cease membership when they resign from eligible employment, retire, or begin a transition to retirement arrangement. To help your employee, you need to:

  1. Encourage your employee to call CSC on 1300 000 377
We can help them choose the benefit option best suited to their individual circumstances.
  2. Provide the appropriate benefit application form
Make sure your employee has the correct benefit application form.
See PSS Benefit Applications Forms or CSS Benefit Applications Forms
  3. Audit the member’s superannuation record
Audit the member’s superannuation record to make sure that it is accurate and send through ceasing entries in your fortnightly ESO data submission.
  4. Complete the Departmental Report
Complete the Departmental Report and forward it together with the completed benefit application form to us. You can submit a scanned copy of the form to benefitapplications@csc.gov.au. If you send an electronic copy, do not also send a paper copy.

Note: this process does not apply for employees transferring between eligible employers. In these cases, no benefit application form needs to be lodged. You will need to report the transfer in your fortnightly ESO data submission.

PSS or CSS member exercising choice of superannuation fund

Important!

A member with a PSS or CSS membership who exercises choice will not be able to rollover their PSS or CSS benefit into their new fund.

APS Employer

A PSS member electing to cease their membership and remain employed with an eligible employer must:

  1. Elect to cease PSS membership and transfer to the PSSap using
Members must use the PSS Election to cease membership form.

AND

  1. Elect another fund after at least one day of PSSap membership

A CSS member must enter into an employment arrangement that means they are no longer eligible to contribute to the CSS. For example, if a full time permanent employee were to become a part-time temporary employee, they would not be able to continue to contribute to the CSS and would need to select another fund.

Non-APS employer

A PSS member may opt out at any time to another superannuation fund.

A CSS member may:

  1. Elect to join an employer-sponsored
Where the employer pays more than the minimum Superannuation Guarantee amount into that scheme on the employee’s behalf

OR

  1. Enter into an employment arrangement that means they are no longer eligible to contribute to the CSS
For example, if a full time permanent employee were to become a part-time temporary employee, they would not be able to continue to contribute to the CSS and would need to select another fund
